Though the national team is making Philippine sports history, the bulk of it is still composed of foreign-born players. While I have no problem with this, it would certainly do me more proud to see locals take the international football scene by storm. Fortunately, the Philippines is on the right track. As the national team continues to grab headlines, more and more locals are now starting to take up football -- and some of them show lots of promise. Here is a list of these prospects:
1. Partick Deyto
Patrick plays as a goalkeeper for Green Archers United. He has made some brilliant and critical saves the UFL. Some even say that he is the reason why the Archers are safe from relegation. Patrick's performances prompted Coach Weiss to invite him to the Azkals' upcoming friendly against Guam.
2. Paolo Pascual
Paolo played as a goalkeeper for the University of San Carlos until he was called up by the PFF to try-out for the Azkals. He made the cut and is now playing for the country's U-22 team and Global FC. At just 20 years old, Paolo truly has a lot of potential.
3. Jerry Barbaso
Despite his unusual haircut, Jerry is considered one of the most disciplined and best defenders in the UFL. Even at the young age of 24, he has been able to go up against the likes of Chiefyy Caligdong, Ian Araneta, Phil Younghusband and Nate Burkey. When he was not included in the Philippine U-23 SEA Games team last year, many raised their eyebrows at Michael Weiss.
4. Jinggoy Valmayor
Jinggoy plays as a striker for the University of the Philippines and Diliman Victory Liner FC. This amazing kid made quite an impact on the UAAP during his first two years. In his first year, Jinggoy won the Rookie of the Year and Best Striker awards. In his second, he managed to keep the Maroons' title hopes alive by scoring a late equalizer against UST in the final. His performances caught the attention of the PFF and he was made part of the unfortunate U-23 Philippine selection that competed in the 2011 SEA Games.
5. OJ Calrino
On the receiving end of Jinggoy Valmyaor's late equalizer was OJ Calrino. Though his team was at fault for conceding the goal, OJ was certainly not to blame as he scored first to put UST ahead. Despite this loss, he remains one of the most promising footballers in the country. Last December, OJ was given a bit of playing experience against the LA Galaxy.
